Redesigning Signs for Autonomous Driving

I was admitted to the Department of Computer Science at the Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences, through the 2022-2023 Talent Program. Under the guidance of a professor, the paper titled “Design of Traffic Signs for Autonomous Driving Based on Simulated Annealing Algorithm” was completed. This paper won the first prize in the 2023 S.-T. Yau High School Science Award for Computer Science and was also a global finalist. Hua Hongyang was recognized as an outstanding participant in the Talent Program and was recommended to compete in the 2024 International Science and Engineering Fairs (ISEF).

Research Content: The study focuses on enhancing the accuracy of traffic sign recognition by autonomous vehicles through the design of more recognizable road signs. A simulated annealing algorithm was developed to find optimal solutions within an extremely large search space, which was used to select suitable road sign designs.

Reflections on the Competition: Scientific research is a process of continuously identifying problems and improving oneself. This project spanned a year and a half, during which I constantly addressed issues within the project, conducted new experiments, such as ablation studies, to verify the universality of the project.
